Cerebral Palsy Did Not Hold Back One Brooklyn Valedictorian

One Brooklyn teen who attended Juan Morel Campos Secondary School in Williamsburg, had everything going against her.

Johileny Meran, a recent high-school graduate and appointed Valedictorian of the Brooklyn school, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair to get around. If that’s not enough, Meran grew up in a homeless shelter as her mother died after a long battle with cancer. Aside from her “struggles,” Johileny Meran is pretty resilient, a fighter, brave and a true inspiration. Anyone who survives what Johileny has been through deserves the world handed to her on a gold platter. She didn’t allow her circumstances to overcome her, instead she used it as motivation to keep going.

According to NBC, Meran says her late mother is what inspires her to keep going. During her acceptance speech at her graduation ceremony, Meran says that, “You need to believe in yourself.”, advice that we can all use from time to time. Along with her valedictorian honor, Meran received a full scholarship to New York University (NYU) where she has plans to study neuroscience and continue in the search for the cure of cancer.
