Wherever there’s a seemingly old restaurant somewhere in Brooklyn, there’s a shady developer lurking in the wings.
According to Brooklyn Paper, an un-named developer is offering a whopping $75 million to acquire a slice of land in Brooklyn Heights. The real estate giant is currently eyeing Pineapple Street near Cadman Plaza where Park Plaza Diner — a beloved 33-year-old neighborhood restaurant — a pet store, toy store, and grocery store are located, in anticipation of replacing them them with a new 40-story residential tower with retail space included on the ground floor. And although the majority of Brooklyn Heights is considered a historical district, Pineapple Street is one of the few places in the neighborhood where high-rises are allowed.
“A 40-story tower will have a significant effect on the quality of life of Cadman Towers,” said Toba Potosky, president of Cadman Towers, the Brooklyn Paper reports. “It will cast a huge shadow and will significantly increase the amount of people.”
Both residents and owners of the Park Plaza, who still has 15 years left on their lease, are thoroughly against the project.

“It’s something that we’re not even really concerned about at this point,” said Nick Likourentzos, manager of the Park Plaza Restaurant and son of owner Peter Likourentzos. “A lot of customers who live in the building have said they plan to oppose it.”
Residents have until January 15th, 2016 to decide whether they want to agree and move forward with the deal.
For the sake of Brooklyn Heights and the rest of the borough, we hope the majority votes “no”.
