With Citi Bikes becoming more convenient and a penny saver, the MTA might soon have some real competition. Ok, not really but that was a cool entry to the bike sharing company’s upcoming added features.

Calories Burned & Other Cool Features Headed To Citi Bike

Citi Bike users will soon be able view calories burned and miles traveled while using the popular blue bikes. The Citi Bike program is currently undergoing a change in leadership. New CEO, Jay Walder, of Motivate, the Brooklyn-based company that owns Citi Bike explains a redeveloped smartphone app will soon offer detailed fitness stats and allow people to make real-time reports of major issues like flat tires and broken seats.

Jay Walder, who also ran the city’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), plans to incorporate docking stations into architectural design plans. “We are still defining how bike share should fit into the urban fabric of the city,” Walder told DailyMail. “Maybe it could be inside of businesses. Maybe it could be inside of buildings. Maybe it could be built into the environment.”

About 4,500 of the Citi Bikes have already been refurbished. Plans to double the number of bicycles from 6,000 to 12,000 in neighborhoods including Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

Walder’s long term goal is for North America’s bikes to be linked in such a way that if a New Yorker travels to another city, they could still use the bike key fob to hop on a bicycle, creating a city wide bicycle network.

Seems pretty cool.
