A tree grows in Brooklyn and from that tree headphones are made.

One creative Brooklyn-based tech company, Gardo Labs, has created a headphone constructed from a tree grown in the borough. The GH1, a product that celebrates the company’s rich Brooklyn heritage, is the first headphone to ever be built from a Brooklyn tree.

According the company’s blog, Gardo Labs has been creating products with-in Brooklyn for the past 60 years. A fruit store that the Gardo family built in Sunset Park back in 1918, became Grado Laboratories in 1953 — creating amazing products since then.

The Gardos found out that a number of trees were going to be cut down to either save them from falling on its own or to be recycled into furniture. One of the trees set to be cut happened to be located in Sunset Park. Before the tree could go into the recycling process the family grabbed a hold of it to create their iconic headphone.

The maple wood headphones are not cheap and will run you around $650 but if you’re willing to spend a few dollars check out places like 4OurEars or the company’s Where to Buy page to find a local store that carries them.

The GH1 headphones are special as they are the introductory item in the Grado Heritage Series.
