Coney Island, known for its legendary amusement park and iconic attractions is finally getting a makeover. Well, sort of.
The 3rd Annual “Spring Into Action,” a project built to tidy up a few Brooklyn neighborhoods, began this past Saturday with sparkling up the streets along Mermaid Avenue. Revamping the neighborhoods include the removal of any unnecessary graffiti and major garbage removal. “Spring Into Action” also partners with Million Trees NYC and the New York Restoration Project to give 100 free trees to local residents. (We know you want a tree!)
“We’re actually giving away trees to people to plant on their own properties or their own community centers or places of worship,” stated Christina Reintamm, the outreach manager for “Spring Into Action.”

Coney Island is only the first stop for the new project this year. The organization has plans to clean-up neighborhoods across Brooklyn including, East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Downtown Brooklyn. Organizers are currently looking for an additional 350 volunteers for their upcoming 18 community service projects. If your not into the cleanup thing, the project has a lot more to offer. Volunteers can also sign up to help other adults get back into the job market or by reading to children at the many education centers.
