This year, we celebrated 17 years of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” an album by Lauryn Hill, that helped frame most of our lives, and still manages to resonate with the issues in the world today. At the time of it’s release, Lauryn herself couldn’t have even imagined the timeless impact that she was bound to leave on our souls.

One artist was so inspired by the work of Ms. Hill, she decided to create an entire art collection dedicated to the album that changed her life. That artist is 23-year-old Imani Shanklin Roberts, a recent Pratt University grad. While most of us were probably traveling or party hopping this summer, Imani decided to spend the last couple of months perfecting her craft and birthing an astounding and breathtaking project entitled “Still Miseducated.” When asked what are three words she would use to describe herself, the DC native responded saying, “Unfiltered, empowering, and vulnerable.” Very fitting response, given the body of work that she was inspired by.

The magical exhibit went down today at Studio 301 in East Williamsburg.  “Still Miseducated” consists of a total of 10 pieces inclusive of one on silent auction entitled “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” to benefit the work of The Future Project. Each piece is an original oil on canvas painting, and is named after a song track from the classic album. Imani, was inspired by a lyric in each song, and that’s what aided in the process of bringing the paintings to life. The one thing that remained consistent in each piece was the depth of the eyes, it was as if they were telling a story.

The viewers were treated to sangria and bite-sized desserts. This exhibit was sponsored by House of Marley, and was brought to us by The Culture LP. We were serenaded by nostalgic throwback tunes by DJ Anna Collecta and Saba Jenga.
