Lorna Luft is part of one of the most iconic musical families in America. Her mother is the late singer, and actress, Judy Garland, her father, the late producer Sidney Luft and half-sister is actress, and singer, Liza Minnelli. While her parents were part of a small group of A-listers in the 50s, Luft was unaware of the magnitude celebrity her family was. “It wasn’t until I was old enough and able to understand that not everyone’s mother is an icon and has someone like Frank Sinatra for a godfather,” Luft says regarding her famous family in an email interview.

As an Emmy-winning TV producer, musician, and actress, Luft is part of that “family business,” and has been performing since a young girl.

“I really never expected to do anything else,” Luft said.

The legendary singer is preparing for her solo concert at On Stage At Kingsborough, where she will perform classics from the Great American Songbook. The “songbook” is not a real book, however, it is a term that applies to songs of both Broadway, and Hollywood movie musicals. These songs have become the core repertoire of famous musicians from Fred Astaire to Frank Sinatra.

Luft will also share personal stories about her life in the business. And what an interesting life she’s had. In 1967, Luft then just a teen, appeared in her mother’s Broadway show, At Home at Palace, where they sang duets. Since then, she has starred more on Broadway, appeared on television, written books, and recorded a music CD titled Lorna Luft: Songs my Mother Taught Me.

Luft, also an Emmy-winning TV producer, is currently in remission from breast cancer, which she has been battling for more than six years. Most recently she was diagnosed with a brain tumor after collapsing following a performance in London in March 2018. Later that month, Luft underwent a successful surgery to remove that tumor.

“I am incredibly grateful for my team of doctors and every scientist in the battle of cancer. I take it one day at a time,” Loft professes. “Thank God I am doing very well, I still tour and sing, just wrote a hit book, A Star is Born, The Film That Got Away, and see my kids and family often. The love of my family and friends and enjoying the work I do keep me going. I love life!”

While she is officially back to performing, Luft also enjoys experiencing newer Broadway productions. Her favorite shows on the great white way are Network, and Hamilton.

“Bryan Cranston is one of the most brilliant actors of our time, and his show is one of the greatest screenplays every written,” Luft says of the Network star, who’s recently been nominated for a Best Actor TONY award. “I [also] absolutely love Hamilton. The songs were so brilliant as is Lin Manuel Miranda. It was something so fresh and inventive and it deserves every award it got.”

When asked what role would get her back to Broadway, she said “anything with Lin Manuel-Miranda.”
