Jay Z seems to be a huge fan of master composer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work. From visiting Hamilton in October 2015, Jay Z is now one of the producers of the film version of Miranda’s 2008 Tony-winning Broadway musical In the Heights, according to PageSix.
Harvey Weinstein of the The Weinstein Company, is also producing the movie musical with theatre producer Scott Sanders. Last September, Jay Z signed a deal with the Weinstein Company for the upcoming Spike TV docu-series TIME: The Kalief Browder Story.
The announcement was made on February 26 pre-Oscars party, which included a medley of tracks from In the Heights performed by Color Purple The Musical star, Cynthia Erivo, Hamilton star, Christopher Jackson, and Holiday Inn star Corbin Bleu and was introduced by Hamilton’s Miranda.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the libretto for In the Heights, will write the screenplay about about Latino characters growing up in New York City’s Washington Heights — a musical in which Miranda says is based on his earlier life. The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu.
Miranda will not reprise his role as Usnavi, but may appear as another character. The movie will begin shooting this spring.
