NYPD To Give Bed-Stuy Residents Their Personal Cell-Phone Numbers (For Safety)

NYPD’s 79th precinct leader, John M. Chell announced, beginning in June, Bed-Stuy residents will be able to add their local police officer’s phone number to their contact list. 

The Brooklyn precinct has about 265 officers that oversee the western half of Bed-Stuy. According to Patch, 32 of the 265 officers will be broken into four groups of eight and each of them will spend some time in the district protect by the 79th. These officers will then get to know the people and community they work to protect and personally hand out their NYPD email addresses and department-issued cell phone numbers for non-emergency situations.

Hell tells Patch that this method should not be in place of 911, as 911 is for all emergency services.

“The team’s goal will be to serve as mini districts’ “personal cops” and “problem solvers.” It is the fancy version of the old beat cop that everyone knew,” Chell said. 

These same officers will attend community meetings and block association functions that focus on quality of life and crimes in the neighborhood.

Chell also announced a pilot program for Bed-Stuy church security. This decision coming after speaking to local clergy members and the aftermath of the Charleston, South Carolina mass church shooting, last year. 

The purpose of both of the programs is to bridge the gab between the NYPD and the Bed-Stuy community.
