Crown Heights Community Members Fight For Safer Neighborhoods

The fight for safer neighborhoods from gun violence continue, but one cannot do it alone.

Community members from Crown Heights gathered on the corner of Dean street and Troy Avenue; the same area where a 20-year-old male was gunned down two days ago. Among the members were community activists were Man Up and Save Our Streets; both of these organizations are centered around creating a safe environment in the neighborhoods they serve.

Man Up and Save Our Streets agree that the previous shooting and many others that have plagued the community is inadmissible and that the community need to come together to put an stop to it. Activist urge that the only way to end the gun violence, is to have adequate participation from everyone.

There have been many lives lost in gun violence whether the person has been directly targeted or because of a stray bullet. According to NYC.gov, in a Firearm Deaths and Injuries in New York City report published in April 2013, the firearm homicide rate among 15-24 year olds was the highest in Crown Heights with 41.9 murders, with the citywide average among youth was 11.1 deaths per 100,000.

The activist group Save Our Streets, showed up to a rally on Thursday, September 17, 2015 after the death of Carey Gabay, 43, an aide to Governor Cuomo when a bullet caught him in a crossfire in Brooklyn. Gabay was shot in the head during a pre-labor day celebration at 3:40 a.m. while walking with his brother along the parade route. After the bullet hit, the 43-year-old was taken to Kings County Hospital where he was in critical condition; he later died of his gunshot wounds. Gabay was a man dedicated to making a difference. The Harvard educated lawyer worked as the First Deputy General Counsel at the Empire State Development Corp.

To this day, there have been no arrests for  Gabay’s death.

“People need to speak out about gun violence,” said Amy Ellenbogen of the S.O.S. Crown Heights Mediation Center. “They need to understand that it is possible to make a difference.”

Save Our Streets operate in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights respectively; whereas Man Up represents the East New York area.
