“The object of this Survival Manual is to save lives — the lives of Black African Males who are on the endangered list in this American society of ours,” says Carol Taylor, RN author of The Little Black Book. Taylor who is currently a Prospect Lefferts Gardens resident, originally wrote the book for her own son’s protection back in 1985.

A journalist, nurse, and community activist, Taylor felt the sharp stings of prejudice in 1958 as the first African American airline flight attendant in the United States. The idea of a race war is ridiculous. She reminds us that there is only one human race and we must continually work together towards world peace and harmony. In the revised edition of her pocket-size book, Taylor prepares one for a police encounter with common sense rules of engagement. You can purchase this must read booklet for only $2 by going to Aalbc.com.

Taylor is also cofounder of the Institute for Inter Racial Harmony, which developed a test to measure racist attitudes. Taylor says we can take steps to combat the colorist conditioning to which we all are exposed by taking the Quotient Test as a first step – take test here: Racismtest.org

In America from 2006 to 2012, a white police officer killed a black person at least twice a week under questionable circumstances and received no punishment. Today, it seems every time we turn on the television set or check social media, we are grieving along with yet another family and community over the loss of another precious life. #Blacks Lives Do Matter.

Last month, Amnesty International USA released #Deadly Force, a state-by-state analysis of laws governing the use of lethal force by law enforcement officials. The report indicates the U.S. falls short of human rights standards designed to prevent unlawful killings by police. Additionally, every state fails to meet international standards. It also tells us that no state statue includes accountability mechanisms for police officers – that’s why they walk. Additionally, governments from the city to the state to the national level have failed to accurately track when and how officers kill. Taylor says we must keep the pressure on our politicians to make positive and significant changes in our communities.
