Bushwick’s Pfizer building opened its doors on Tuesday, September 27, to Per Scholas — a non-profit tech boot camp, solely for unemployed and undeserved people. The program was founded over 20 years ago training people — who live in often forgotten communities — for careers in technology.

“We are founded on the belief that there’s talent in communities across the country that’s going overlooked,” Managing Director Kelly Richardson explained in an interview with Technically Brooklyn.

With an ultimate goal to rebuild the views of minorities and bring people out of poverty, Per Scholas is very selective with their candidates. The intense training course is an estimate of $8,000 per student — costing the students not a dime, thus training leaders must feel confident each student will complete the program and go on to hold successful careers. Prior to receiving an acceptance letter, each candidate is required to take an amplitude test, undergo three interviews, and perform a light box exam. In 2015, the program accepted 500 student out of 2,000 applicants.

According to Per Scholas news page, the expansion to Brooklyn will allow the IT program to train an additional 140 New Yorkers annually, resulting in more than 550 New Yorkers trained and prepared for technology careers every year.

“The jobs of today and tomorrow are rooted in technology, and our workforce must be planted in the high-quality tech skills needed to succeed in the marketplace,” Brooklyn’s Borough President, Eric L. Adams chimed in on the new addition. “I am pleased to support Per Scholas in the outfitting of training labs for their new Bedford-Stuyvesant facility that promises to support a diverse and talented array of students.”
