Back in December of 2015, it was announced that Madiba restaurant in Fort Greene was struggling to stay afloat. The popular eatery that honors the late Nelson Mandela, launched an online Indiegogo campaign seeking to raise $200,000 from the public to help keep its doors open. The campaign closed late last month and was only able to raise just 1o percent of it’s asking.
The campaign dubbed #SaveMadiba garnered 114 backers and was able to raise $20,000. Though 20K is a huge amount for a public campaign, it sill not nearly enough for the restaurant to cover back bills and continue to feed it’s customers. According to Forbes, owner Mark Henegan waited until the very last moment to seek help as a series of financial losses and setbacks that had piled up. Those included some $200,000 in high-cost debt, a tax dispute, an informal lease with his landlord and a troubled effort at expansion.

Madiba’s Harlem location had to shut down last year, one year after opening, due to the company’s struggle.
While Madiba still remains open, reports of the restaurant’s future looks pretty gloomy. Let’s continue to support this small business while we still can. It’s one of many trying to last in this new Brooklyn.
