“There is no logic that can be superimposed on the city; people make it, and it is to them, not buildings, that we must fit our plans,” wisely wrote the late author and activist, Jane Jacobs in 1958.

What she so passionately stated back in the 20th century still holds true today. Let’s take a look at a small community garden located at 115 Rogers Avenue and Park Place right next door to the Crown Heights Youth Collective. According to the Gothamist, the building that once stood where the garden sits today, had been literally rotting away for years.

The Collective petitioned the city to demolish the unsafe structure. In 2006, after the area had been cleared, community members revitalized it by creating a beautiful garden space with plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables; all the while trying to find the lot’s owner. Even city agencies had no information on the person who had abandoned the property.

There was an interesting turn of events though in June of 2014. TYC Reality claimed to be the new owner of the lot. The company built a fence around the entire property, locking out those who had worked so hard for years developing and maintaining it.

Jacobs’ article contends, the best way for the city to plan is to find out what people in the area want; they must see how people are using the area. Change in cities is necessary and constant but why change something that is already working, uplifting residents, and beautifying the neighborhood. Simply put, Roger That Garden belongs in Crown Heights. There is a lack of green spaces and the community has already spoken.

Presently, the Department of Investigation is looking into how TYC acquired the property. For more information or to find out how you can help go to: Rogerthatgardenproject@gmal.com.
