Follow your dreams, no matter the obstacle! 13- year-old Vako Gvelesiani of Bensonhurst, reminds us exactly what that means. Vako competed against 500 other kids for one of the open 17 spots of the Brooklyn Nets Kid’s Dance Team. Despite losing half of his hearing at the age of two, due to a high fever, he had a passion for music and dance and wanted to still take on the challenge.
Vako who has been dancing since he was 2 years old, defeated the odds and received a spot on the team. He currently takes lessons at Horizons Dance School near his home in Brooklyn. He studies dance at Mark Twain Intermediate School 239 for the Gifted and Talented and has recently been accepted into the dance program at the famous, LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan.
The intense audition was ran by Kimberlee Garris, Barclays Center director of entertainment marketing assisted by Tanisha Scott, a very talented and popular choreographer who has worked with Rihanna, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé. With only 17 spots and over 500 kids auditioning, they did 2 cuts before the 17 were chosen.

Vako’s parents decided not to tell anyone of his condition because they didn’t want to treat him any differently. By the third week of rehearsals Kimberlee Garris noticed that he was a great dancer but wasn’t following directions too well. She decided to take it up with his parents and they finally broke down and told her of his hearing impairment. Apparently that made the entire team appreciate him more.
On Sunday at the Brooklyn Nets playoff game against the raptors Vako and his fellow team members stunned the crowd with their impeccable dance skills. Vako is now probably the coolest kid on the block, if he wasn’t already.
