What do you do if your best friend has the flu? Bring them some chicken soup or Gatorade and wish them well? Avoid contact altogether? What do you do if man’s best friend gets the flu?

The H3N2 strain of canine flu is plaguing cities around the country, and it recently arrived in Brooklyn. Symptoms of the highly contagious virus include runny nose, fever, lost appetite, coughing and sneezing. The virus is transmitted through contact but is also airborne. This means any dog can catch the flu just from being near an infected dog, or even being petted by someone who’s petted a second dog.

Concerned dog parents should consider getting their pooches vaccinated. The initial vaccination requires a second shot two weeks later to provide complete immunity, so there’s no time to spare in getting into see the vet.

Despite the fact that H3N2 can be fatal 10% of the time, some dog owners aren’t overly concerned. Bed-Stuy dog walker and owner Brian Lewis told Pix11, “My wife and I talked about maybe avoiding the dog park and things like that, but we decided to risk it.”

Others have decided to forego vaccination due to the cost, but according to Doctor Yasmine Mortsakis, that’s unwise. “The more sociable dogs are, the more likely they are to interact with others that may have communicable diseases,” she said. “Any dog that goes to day care or a park, or dogs that are walked in group environments, should get vaccinated for sure.”

Doctor Natara Loose of the Neighborhood Vet even took to Instagram to urgently warn dog parents:

Some owners and day care facilities have been reluctant to disclose canine flu-related info. Owners are afraid of being blackballed by their favorite day cares and dog walkers, while day cares and other businesses are worried about losing clientele. Though their concerns are understandable, it would be better for everyone to just be honest. Everyone has had that coworker that unsuccessfully tries to hide their sickness at work. It doesn’t fool anyone, but it puts everyone at risk. This is no different.
