‘The Color Purple’ Star, Heather Headley Talks #BroadwaySoDiverse

by The Color Purple has become a major success on Broadway since its revival just 6 months ago. The musical, starring Cynthia Erivo, Danielle Brooks and Heather Headley, received 11 TONY award nominations and rightfully scored “Best Revival Of A Musical” amongst others.
Some of The Color Purple cast, who perform eight shows a week, took their only day off on Monday to be a part of an intimate evening with a few lucky winners of a contest hosted by WLBS. The exclusive listener event in honor of Black Music Month, hosted by WBLS’ Lenny Green and one half of Mary Mary and WLIB’s Erica Campbell at SOB’s in New York City, included a live Q&A with star Heather Headley, who currently plays Shug Avery in the musical.
During the talk back session with fans, Headley, who previously won a TONY award for “Best Actress In A Musical” for her role in Aida back in 2000, expressed how much she loves being part The Color Purple cast during such a culturally diverse Broadway season.
“I am proud of the direction that Broadway is going. When I first started Broadway about 15 years ago, Broadway didn’t have that hashtag [#BroadwaySoDiverse] and now seeing the evolution of Broadway with the hashtag is something to be proud of and I am happy to be a part of it,” Headley says. “I am also proud to see that there are people of color playing leading roles on Broadway, especially on the street that we are on. We have Shuffle Along, Hamilton and many other diverse people playing these roles on one street. I call it the urban area of Broadway. But it is something that I am very proud to be a part of.”
