“Theater shouldn’t be expensive. Theater shouldn’t be exclusive,” said Elizabeth Swados, who wrote the book, lyrics, and music for Encores! Off-Center production of Off-Broadway musical Runaways.

The NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), seems to agree as they have partnered up with iHeartMedia’s 106.7 LITE FM to bring Broadway’s most popular shows to the outer boroughs. “Broadway in the Boros” is a series of free lunchtime performances of hit Broadway shows in neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Every event is completely open to the public, family friendly and FREE.

This Friday, July 15, will kick off the summertime series in Fort Greene Park (entrance at Myrtle and North Portland avenues), from noon to 1:30pm, with extended excerpts from Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. Carole King, who actually was born in Brooklyn, is the perfect musical to kick off the series and I can personally account the show is spectacular.

Though shows have yet to be announced for the following dates in the other boroughs —Flushing Meadows Corona Park (Queens) on Friday, July 29 and St. Mary’s Park (Bronx), Thursday, August 18 — we can assure you, they’ll both be worth it. Future dates, shows and locations will be announced soon.

Let’s all hope Hamilton makes its way to Brooklyn the next go around. Fingers crossed!
