People talk about the many cool things Brooklyn has to offer; from the food, to the hang out spots, to the historic landscapes. However, in the midst of those Brooklyn conversations I highly doubt people think about the cemeteries in our borough and how important they are to our history. Well, prior to Prospect Park and even NYC’s Central Park, there was Greenwood cemetery. Yes, Cemetery!

Greenwood Cemetery is located in Greenwood Heights, surrounded by Kensington and Sunset Park. Greenwood was landmarked in 1838 and to this day, is recognized to be unlike any place in New York City. While it is the oldest park in the city, it houses the largest, oldest, and most diverse collection of trees in the entire North East. Actor John Tuturro refers to it as a “mecca of history,” and several other Brooklynites strongly agree.

As times changes and technology improves, according to News 12 Brooklyn, its been confirmed that the cemetery decided to convert its historic archive collection of records to a digital platform. The records tend to entail approximately 570,000 people who were buried at the site. The initial records currently fill two rooms from top to bottom with each person’s documents and records.

The 177-year-old Greenwood Cemetery takes great pride in it’s location and its historic features that it gives back to the borough — allowing tours and housing occasional events. As for 2016, May 30 is Greenwood’s Annual (FREE) Memorial Day Concert. The day is set to kick off at 2pm and run til 5pm where the ISO Symphonic Band will perform. The band was founded in 1995 and this year they are hoping to sponsor talented students throughout New York City.
