It’s spring at last! The weather is warmer. The birds are chirping and flowers are blooming. We excitedly free ourselves from heavy winter coats, sweaters, and boots. Day light lasts longer and our energy seems more abundant. It’s time to take out the bike, if you’ve not done so already.

Biking in Brooklyn has had a long and interesting history. According to an AM New York article dated May 15, 2015, “the first recorded sighting of a bike in Brooklyn may have been on Christmas Day, 1868.” The first bicycle factory opened in 1872 and by the 1890s, cycling was both chic and commonplace.

City streets, back then, were cobblestoned. Cyclists needed smoother riding surfaces. The Brooklyn Historical Society points out that the first bike path in the United States was constructed in Brooklyn along Ocean Parkway, from Prospect Park to Coney Island. Bicycle clubs, tricycles, and bikes built for multiple riders were everywhere in Brooklyn.

Today in Brooklyn, we see biking enthusiasm taken to a new level. With Citi Bike’s fleet of sturdy and durable bikes, Brooklynites can rent and return bikes from several convenient locations. We are joining clubs, like the Brooklyn Bicycle Club (740 cyclists strong). We are riding to work, school, and just for fun. We have parks, paths, and bike lanes just for us. And with the increased interest in health and wellness, the number of regular bikers is increasing. Does regular biking help you live longer? Well, one thing’s for sure, you get a fantastic cardio workout from cycling. It can be dangerous though, if you’re not responsible and don’t abide by the law. “Cycling deaths have doubled over last year in New York City,” says the Gothamist in October of 2014.

Please familiarize yourself with Bike Smart: The Official Guide to Cycling in New York City by the Department of Transportation (DOT) before going out for that ride.
