One of the most beautiful arenas in the nation is receiving a beauty touch-up. Prospect Heights’ Barclays Center is receiving one of the largest green rooftops.
The tedious project that has already begun to see a few sprouted sections is expected to be complete by September. The 3-acre curving rooftop is expected to be filled with bright green grass, seasonal flowers and plants.

“We’re very excited about the green roof because it will add additional texture and color and send an extraordinary message about urban areas as innovative, sustainable and attractive,” MaryAnne Gilmartin, president and CEO of Forest City Ratner Cos., which built the arena, told CBS Local.
The new roof is said to make the arena a bit more beautiful but also lessen the noise of loud concerts and screaming fans at sports games— a problem that has been brought up numerous times from residents who live near the arena. The roof is also said to double as a sponge to capture about 2 million gallons of storm water to keep it from draining into city streets and waterways.
