A rainy and damp night in Brooklyn left its mark inside Barclays Center as tonight’s NBA main event featured the Brooklyn Nets up the holders of the #3 seat in the Eastern Conference, the Atlanta Hawks. The Nets certainly looked good as of late; especially by defeating the San Antonio Spurs, the NBA defending champions. Could the Nets have their first 3-game winning streak tonight?
The Nets started the first quarter continuing to play to their individual strengths while sharing the ball. Brook Lopez looked comfortable with his outside shot and Deron Williams looked better taking his shot from beyond the arc. Brooklyn ended taking up an early 16-10 lead. Atlanta made things interesting as they ended up tying the game, 16-16. But thanks to a Jarrett Jack’s cross over-jumper, the Nets ended the quarter on top 18-16.
2nd quarter action started off with Brooklyn’s 2nd unit being extremely lackluster. Atlanta took advantage tying the game then eventually taking their first lead since 2-0 on a 12-2 run; 22-18. Atlanta began extending their lead with shots from beyond the arc to put the Nets in a serious double digit deficit. Brooklyn just couldn’t buy a basket and managed to get worse for them as Atlanta went on a 29-9 run courtesy of point guard Jeff Teague making 2 consecutive steals, more 3 pointers, and even a buzzer beating 3 from the Hawks to end the half 52-31.
Coming out of the half, Atlanta continued to pour it on from 3 going up as much as 25 points. Brooklyn began chipping away at the lead thanks to Lopez who scored 11 in the quarter. Atlanta, however went back to what got them the lead and Atlanta closed the quarter 78-55. Nets would need a herculean 4th quarter performance to turn this game around in their favor.
Entering the 4th, Brooklyn may have decided that the 23 point deficit was too large to overcome as none of the starters played in the quarter. The bench was emptied out and Coach Hollins, who received a technical early on in the night, may have decided it was better to fight another day. The game mercifully ended as Atlanta easily won the game, 98-75.
