“American Idol” contestant, Amalia Watty stole the show with big hair and Bob Dylan.
The 28-year-old Bushwick resident has gone from performing in subway cars in New York City to landing herself a golden ticket to Hollywood on Monday night’s episode of “Idol”. With a voice that honors her Caribbean roots and soulful gritty vibes of the borough, Watty definitely is one to watch this season.
Watty chose to perform her version of Bob Dylan’s iconic tune, “Make You Feel My Love” during the audition. “Idol” judges Lionel Richie said her range, sound and uniqueness were all the things the judges were looking for, Katy Perry said she needed to hear more of her sound, and Luke Bryan called her soulful and cool.
“I was a big ball of emotion. It was a nerve-wracking moment to be in that room,” Watty told AM New York of auditioning in front three of music’s biggest stars. “They all thought my tone was very different, very interesting,” she recalls. “I just tried to be me 100 percent and I got it.”
Originally from Anguilla, Watty moved to the city over a decade ago and favored performing on the L, 5 and Shuttle trains with friends.

“We had a short medley prepared and every time the train stopped we’d hop on the next car during non-peak hours,” she recalls to AMNY. “I’ve been gigging around the city for a couple of years.”
Having performed at the U.S. Open and participated in the Afropunk Brooklyn Battle of the Bands competition in 2016, Watty still questioned if she should continue pursuing singing as a career. “American Idol” has given her the confidence to keep her dream alive.
“I feel like I’m doing something right, and you know, I have a chance,” Watty told ABC7. And Brooklyn has her back.
