It’s after 7:30 p.m. and the sun is setting. At Madiba Restaurant in Fort Greene, the dinner crowd was starting to pick up. Some came for the food but others came for the viewing of Beyoncé’s new visual album Lemonade.
Although Beyoncé is the obvious star in this video, there’s another creative that’s worthy of recognition.
Laolu Senbanjo, is man who wears many hats. He’s an artist, musician, a former human rights lawyer and activist who was born in Nigeria but has established himself in Brooklyn. Senbanjo’s art follows the Sacred Art of the Orin which is a Yoruba philosophy. With that type of philosophy, Senbanjo transmits that to his human canvas.
Senbanjo’s latest work is featured in Beyoncé’s Lemonade — a visual album that debuted last night exclusively on HBO. The face of Beyoncé and bodies of her back-up dancers was the art work of Laolu.

Social media has played a huge role when it comes to being a creative and getting your content out for people to see. Laolu’s work was first recognized by Beyoncé and her management team through his Instagram.
“It’s a major thing, it gives you a voice as an artist. People can almost see you directly,” Senbanjo said. “I didn’t know anyone was watching what I was doing at that level.”
Working with Beyoncé is an accomplishment within itself — it is not everyday that one gets to work with a creative with such a hard work ethic.
“I got a call from Parkwood Entertainment [Beyoncé’s management company] to ask my availability for a project. Beyoncé’s team manager asked to meet me through the picture sharing application Instagram,” Senbanjo continued.
After experiencing this great accomplishment people might be wondering what is next for the Brooklyn based artist. With the most humble way, Laolu responds “A lot of things but I cannot say.” However, he did say that he has something in the works with Usher as well as DJ Black Coffee who is the biggest DJ known in Africa.
