Students at the Alpha School in East New York wrote, directed, and starred in a play that aimed to eliminate the myths of drugs and alcohol. The students were motivated to do this play because of National Drugs and Alcohol Facts week (Jan.25-31.) The event was organized by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
The overarching goal of the play was to collaborate with a plethora of teenagers as well as scientists to impede the myths about drugs and alcohol that has been shown to teens on the internet, movies, music, and through side conversations among their peers.
The students performed on January 28th and explained, through live art, to the audience that the choices they make may lead to a different outcome. The plot of the play included scenarios that involved students who succumbed under peer pressure to take drugs and others who did not. The play concluded with the students reciting the school’s mantra of unity, strength, and love.

The students received many praises from those in attendance, including, Police Chief Jeffery Maddrey, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn North, who was proud of the students for their work and the message that they conveyed on the stage.
“It is so powerful to see young people tell other young people ‘Don’t do drugs. Don’t get involved in this. You can graduate and you can have a better life.’ You all did a great job and we are all proud of you,” Maddrey told the students.
After the play, the students held an interactive session that whose main focus was around the National Drug and Alcohol IQ challenge. At the end, the students solidified their message by making a pledge. The pledge card started off as “I want to SHATTER THE MYTHS because…” the students will fill in the blank with what they sought fit.
The Alpha School is a GED program that is taught by the NYC Department of Education teachers. The students age ranged from 17 to 21 are encouraged to become productive members of their community as well in their college/vocational setting as well.
