#WHM: 6 Millennial Women Adding Excellence To Brooklyn

March is dedicated to women all over the world to honor them for their extreme efforts, successful journeys, and the foundation they’ve laid and paved for other young ladies and women to follow suit. Brooklyn is known for it uniqueness and diversity as well as excellence. With such a strong alumni of successful Brooklynites, ranging from Jay Z to Spike Lee, it’s time for some ladies to put Brooklyn on the map.
Here are six millennial women I believe are adding excellence to Brooklyn and beyond:
Khadija Shari Nicholas
Brooklynite Khadija Shari Nicholas has created a firm foundation for herself in the world of dance. The Trinidadian-American has perfected her craft as she studied at numerous institutions starting with the Restoration Dance Center, followed by Creative Outlet Dance Theater of Brooklyn, The Alvin Ailey School concluding with SUNY Purchase College, which eventually granted her the opportunity to pursue dance professionally. Khadija has performed with big names such as Pharrell, along side Rihanna on her Diamonds World Tour and this year she evolved to even greater heights as she performed at Super Bowl 50 alongside Beyonce’s epic half time performance.

Rhonesha Byng
Rhonesha Byng adds to the excellence of Brooklyn through her motto, “No One Ever Slows Her Agenda,” which also happens to be the inspiration behind her flawless website, HerAgenda.com. The site was created to inspire and empower young women to follow their dreams and aspirations. Her Agenda has raised so much noise, it was featured in Forbes as a “Top Website for Women,” and won a NYABJ award for its “Peek Inside Her Agenda” series which shines light on successful women within various industries. Due to Rhonesha’s audacious establishments, she has gone on to earn awards from the Kauffman Foundation and Youth Venture. Her titles don’t stop there, Rhonesha is also an Emmy award winning journalist with WNBC as has been recognized as one of the top 50 African American women to follow on Twitter. Currently, Rhonesha Byng contributes to sites such as The Huffington Post and Madame Noire where she covers various stories from breaking news, music features, cultural stories and more.

Yarisbeth Donaldson
Women everywhere strive to look good and perfect the epic face beat! 20-year-old Brooklyn native, Yarisbeth Donaldson, has created a social media portfolio that showcases her talents as a make-up artist in the Big Apple. The young artist has slayed several faces with her unique, natural make up techniques from singer Tiara Thomas to reality television star, Erica Mena and more. She draws countless amounts of young girls in with her determined and unique talents as well as her popular YouTube channel that has a whopping number of over 16,000 subscribers.

Jen BK
Jen Brooklyn is viewed as an ambitious, witty, relatable personality. Known from her position as Editor in Chief at NYC’s radio station Hot 97 — handling all of their social media accounts and hosting for the station’s digital television show; she’s just getting started. Last year, she hosted the website launch for her brand We Love Ladies First which was created to connect and bring forth relatable topics with other females through topics on love and relationships, beauty and career, fashion, spirituality and art, and entertainment news. In honor of Women’s History Month, Jen’s brand “ladies first” was one of ten shows chosen globally to be apart of YouTube’s Women’s Program global campaign where content is promoted on behalf of female creators. She is very proud to represent NYC this month and most of all Brooklyn.

Lexy Funk
Brooklyn speaks volumes through fashion as various trends have become so unique that the borough was given their own fashion week. Lexy Funk contributes to the urban wear of Brooklyn as she began making messenger bags in the 1990’s in her loft apartment. A few years later in 2001, she expanded and opened her first retail store in her neighborhood of Williamsburg, called Brooklyn Industries. Due to Funk’s idea and perseverance within the company to provide organic and post-consumer fabricated clothing, she was Ernst & Young’s 2010 Entrepreneur. Today, Brooklyn Industries is a nationwide store which also caters to customers online.

Emily Doubilet
Emily Doubilet, one of the many co-founders of Greenpoints’ Susty Party along with other female founders, have created, classy, sustainable, compostable party tableware and home supplies. The products are created from sourced materials that are plastic-free, non toxic, and recycled content that is designed to biodegrade in a home or industrial compost. The products are funded by non-profit factories who provide employment opportunities and empowerment to people with disabilities such as visual impairments, or support charitable causes by donating funds.
