What The Women Of TIDAL X: 10/20 Taught Me About Feminism

The music streaming phenomenon owned by Jay Z and other platinum selling artist, put on one of the biggest concerts to ever come to Brooklyn. The line-up of performers at the TIDAL X: 10/20 included Meek Mill, Rick Ross, Nick Jonas, Usher, Jay Z, Beyonce and more. To say it precisely, the concert was completely bad-ass!

Though the concert consisted of some of the biggest names in music,  of the 21 performers, only four were women. The women called to slay the Brooklyn stage included “Here” singer and TIDAL rising star, Alessia Cara, “Im Yours” singer and Brooklyn boss-babe, Justine Skye and headliners Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé.

All four women came, saw and conquered all by their damn selves. Not one of the women needed any help from any male artist, although Justine Skye choicely brought out 2 Milly after a fun solo set and Beyoncé, rightfully so, performed one song with her husband, Jay Z, after a killer collaboration with Nicki Minaj.

I’d challenge one powerful debate that had it been just been those four women performing at Barclays Center, it would just be as packed as the sold out arena, the night of TIDAL. Women are continually changing the game in music and making men look to them for help.

Rising stars Alessia Cara and Justine Skye are both rising to the top rather swiftly. Both solo artist became popular via social media’s public platforms. Alessia would sing covers that would quickly gain thousands of views on Youtube and Justine Skye’s Tumblr account followers dubbed her the purple unicorn as she stood out, unique, with her purple hair, quirkiness and undeniable vocals. Give both of these women a few more years, a few more albums and showcases and they’ll both be headlining Barclays Center, alone.

Both Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé need no introduction or explanation but I’ll give you one anyway. Nicki Minaj is changing the game for women in rap music. We haven’t had a prominent female in rap since Missy Elliot, Eve and Brooklyn’s own, Lil’ Kim, back in the 90s. Thou these women opened doors for others to follow in their footsteps, many have tried but have not been successful until Nicki.  In what is a given male dominated genre, Nicki has come through and shattered windows in her raise to the top, she continues to show and prove on why she deserves to be here.

Beyoncé continues to set the bar high for those that follow in her footsteps. The songstress has officially changed the way artist release music and put on shows. Yoncé has been extremely strategic in who she collabs with, who she co-signs, how she looks, the type of music she puts out and how she discusses her personal life. She gives the public only as much as she wants us to have and still continues to steal our hearts.

These four deserve to be the faces of the feminist movement. They’re not only wives, mothers, daughters, sisters and best-friends but they are the hard-workers, the fighters of their dreams and they too deserve the credit. In a male dominated show, these women came out swinging — each killing their sets and having the crowd visibly wanting more.

Women in music are dominating and thanks to the newbies, they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
