When people think “Afro-Punk,” they may assume that it’s just another music festival. Afro-Punk, a historical movement was created in 2002 by music industry veteran, Matthew Morgan and writer-director, James Spooner.

Morgan and Spooner partnered to bring awareness and understanding to indie rock and punk music. They believed that these genres could reach a wider audience beyond the typical stereotype of being just for certain demographic.

Shortly, after the inception of this growing movement Afro-Punk: The Movie was created and centered around Black punks in America.

In 2005 the very first Afro-Punk festival made its debut at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Since then, performers have included, Cee Lo Green, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Gym Class Heroes, Afrika Bambaataa, Janelle Monáe, D’Angelo and so many more. Afro-Punk is the place where people can be themselves and have a good time.
