Brooklyn College Academy Has 100 Percent Black Graduation Rate

Brooklyn College Academy, the school that spit out legendary rappers, Foxy Brown and Lil Kim, currently has the rep as one of the baddest schools in the borough.

According to U.S. News and World Report, “100 percent of the school’s black students graduated on time last year, and almost all of them went on to four-year colleges.” It was also named one of the top-performing schools by the Chancellor’s Office.

The Academy was established in 1986 and provides individualized attention to students grades nine through twelve. Teachers have high expectations of their students who are are nurtured in a caring environment. The school is divided into two parts. The Senior Institute for grades eleven and twelve is located in James Hall right on the Brooklyn College campus at 2900 Bedford Avenue. The Middle Institute (Bridges to Brooklyn) for ninth and tenth graders is located at the Annex Site at 350 Coney Island Avenue across the street from Prospect Park.

The mission of the academy is to strengthen student performance and to expand students’ horizons to include postsecondary educational opportunities and career goals. By the time students, who are mostly of Caribbean origin, are ready to graduate, they would have earned up to 30 college credits along with a high school diploma. Principal Nicholas Mazzarella proudly leads the academy with a careful mixture of control and positive reinforcement.

Eligibility is based on standardized state test scores and report card grades of 85 or above in science and English, and 80 or above in math and social studies.
