Remember D’Angelo? How could you forget the ’90s sex symbol for R&B. Yesterday night one of the most hottest figures in music came out of hiding as the Red Bull Music Academy hosted “A Conversation with D’Angelo” at the Brooklyn Museum. The auditorium where the conversation was held was packed with fans, all who wanted that one question answered. What happened and where have you been?

Nelson George, renowned music critic, moderated the conversation. As D’Angelo smoked a couple of cigarettes, yes inside of a museum, he spoke lightly about his career and music. Questlove from The Roots was there and even joined D’Angelo on stage to fill in some of the stories that might have gone missing, or D’Angelo purposely left out.  A huge range of artists came up in the conversation, from Slipknot, one of the bands from the same area as D’Angelo who made it big, through his various collaborators and peers, from Erykah Badu to R Kelly, and of course the Roots, with Questlove revealing that the last track on their Illadelph Halflife record segues into Voodoo’s opener, Playa Playa. D’Angelo himself was circumspect about today’s jumble of sounds.
