Young Student Receives Positive Reinforcements After Dealing With Bullies

Students need a positive environment to succeed and reach their fullest potential. It takes the work of the parents, teachers, administrative staff, and other outside reinforcements to make a child feel like they matter.

Mildred Pryor told Pix11 that she worried everyday when she had to send her son off to school. Pryor’s 10-year-old son, Terrell — a special needs student — was picked on for months at P.S.13, an elementary school in East New York.

On Thursday, April 7, Terrell went home with a swollen eye and bloody nose after he was attacked by a classmate at the school, reports say.

“There’s been a little girl in his class that’s ripping up his books. She started calling her older brothers to beat him up and he hides in the bathroom,” Pryor said.

Terrell openly expressed that he thought about suicide after his unforgivable experience at his elementary school. All who were present at Saturday’s event gathered around Terrell and embraced him with a hug to show that they care.

Terrell’s warm embrace came after his family members plea to the Department of Education to do something about the constant bullying that he was facing in his school.

“Not one time with all the incidents that’s happened to him were the parents ever brought up to the school,” said Linda Pryor, the student’s grandmother.

The family’s prayers were answered after the district superintendent granted Terrell a safety transfer.

Another parent called out to the city to make public schools safer after he found out his six-year-old grandson was also being bullied to the point where the young boy found a box cutter and brought it to school to protect himself, Pix11 reports.

“As a former public school parent and long-time classroom teacher and administrator, the Chancellor’s top priority is keeping all students and staff safe,” an Education Department spokesperson said in a statement.

“When an incident occurs at a school, we act immediately and follow scrupulous protocols. There is absolutely zero tolerance for anything but a safe and supportive learning environment in every school building.​
