Alive at Green-Wood
500 25th Street at The Green-Wood Cemetery
Time: 12pm – 2pm
Price: $20
There’s a lot more to a cemetery than death. There’s life – a lot of it. In fact, for Green-Wood, the natural environment is a critical part of our future. Join us for this new walking tour to explore the potential of the Cemetery’s 478 acres as a public garden, a distinction that means much more than manicured lawns and azaleas. It means that we work to teach our visitors about Green-Wood’s ecology and environmental diversity. As an accredited arboretum, the Cemetery has over 7,000 trees and a master plan that includes new interpretive panels (signs) across the grounds. You’ll learn so much about the natural beauty and wildlife at Green-Wood that you’ll want to come back and give your own tour to family and friends!

Silent Movie Matinee: All Quiet on the Western Front
10 Grand Army Plaza at Brooklyn Public Library
Time: 12:30pm – 2:30pm
FREE
Commemorate Veterans Day today, which marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War One. Today’s film is based on the German novel by Erich Maria Remarque, which tells the story of Paul Bäumer (played by Lew Ayres), who enlisted in the German army with dreams of heroism but was disillusioned by the reality and futility of war. It was released as an early sound-talkie that won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Direction, but today’s print is a rare silent-version created for theaters not yet wired-for-sound.

One of them is Emily Roebling, of the bridge-building Roeblings, one is a black real estate mogul named Elizabeth Gloucester, and one is Lib Tilton, the mistress in the adultery trial of Henry Ward Beecher. The tour includes an interactive portion where guests will act out an abbreviated version of the Beecher/Tilton scandal.
