Brooklyn-born filmmaker and director, Spike Lee, had been given one of the biggest jobs at the 45th Annual New York City Marathon. Lee became the first-ever actual New Yorker to grand marshal the biggest run to cross the boroughs.

“I grew up in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and I would go to the corner of South Elliot Place and Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene,” Lee told CBS Local.

Though Lee is not a runner, he did join and manage to finish the race in a convertible.

“I’m coming with an open mind, just going to enjoy, take pictures; my wife will be in the backseat, waving, taking pictures, taking it in,” Lee told CBS.

In true filmmaker fashion, Lee created a short film that was shown right before the start of the race. The film called Da New York Joint, highlights all the great things about the city, from diversity to chocolate egg-creams to basketball and the birth-place of hip-hop.
