With only one day remaining until the NBA regular season is over, ex-Brooklyn Net Paul Pierce decided to let the truth be told about his former team.
During an interview with ESPN, Pierce described the vibe as lazy and horrible even with the veterans. In Pierce’s own words he says:
“It was just the guys’ attitudes there. It wasn’t like we were surrounded by a bunch of young guys. They were vets who didn’t want to play and didn’t want to practice. I was looking around saying, ‘What’s this?’ Kevin and I had to pick them up every day in practice. If me and Kevin weren’t there, that team would have folded up. That team would’ve packed it in. We kept them going each and everyday.“
From Pierce’s view, he did spend most of his time in Boston with an exceptional coach in Doc Rivers before being traded. Rivers is not a soft coach by any means and his need for his team to go above and beyond can be validated through the many playoff battles they’ve had and an NBA Championship. For those thinking that Pierce may be telling some sort of lie or half-truths, remember Joe Johnson made a statement, almost a joke about how his team practiced last season. Johnson was asked days before the 2014-2015 season started about practice and he responded “We practiced, but, you know…na not really.”

From the Nets view, the team simply didn’t have a consistent system. Coach Lionel Hollins is their forth coach in 3 years, that’s more coaches than years that they have been in the borough. Coach Hollins is probably a coach who doesn’t take it easy in practice and wants more from his players since he’s from “the old school” of basketball. Hollings also has a system but the Nets are in their first year of using it. He may just need the right pieces for it to work effectively.
Pierce also wanted to look to Deron Williams as the leader of the team but thought he took too long nursing his injuries. Pierce wanted D-Will to look and feel like an MVP candidate but said that Deron simply didn’t want that. He doesn’t want to be that guy. Pierce also added that Joe Johnson is quiet and keeps to himself. Finally, Pierce said that he would only have stayed because of Kevin Garnett because he didn’t want to leave Garnett in that type of environment by himself.
When you look at the Nets season and align that with the statements of Joe Johnson at the start and now Paul Pierce’s at the end of the season, expect some anger, some whispers, and some action to be taken to address an apparent problem with the Brooklyn Nets.
