There’s one thing in Brooklyn that hasn’t changed and that’s Coney Island’s Nathan’s Famous restaurant.

The hot dog staple will celebrate 100 years of business this Memorial Day by offering their $4.25 hot dogs for just a nickel (2 hot dogs max) from 11 a.m. to 2p.m. — the same price Founder Nathan Handwerker charged for his sausages when he first opened his hot dog stand.

Handwerker, a Polish immigrant, got his start by slicing buns and delivering franks for Coney Island entrepreneur Charles Feltman — the man who literally invented the hot dog in the mid-19th century. He reportedly “lived on free hot dogs,” slept on the kitchen floor of Feltman’s Surf Avenue restaurant, and eventually saved up $300 and opened a competing stand–5 cents a hot dog instead of 10 cents, according to the Coney Island blog Amusing the Zillion.

Talk about training your competition.

There are roughly now over 300 Nathan’s Famous hot dog restaurants and carts around the world. But only the original spot on 1310 Surf Avenue is offering the deal!

Cheers to more hotdogs!
