MC Lyte is known for her inspirational music and songs that drive a powerful message and “Dear John” is nothing short of that. The song was inspired by Lyte’s scholarship fund, EducateOurMen, which is also a part of her hip-hop Sisters organization.

The video displays a side of fathers that are rarely shown in the media including fathers embracing, loving and caring for their children. The video also pays homage to incredible black leaders who were also great fathers including Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and many others.
