“How does a bastard, orphan…dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished in squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?” The infamous Aaron Burr (Leslie Odom, Jr.) reflects on his friend, foe, and the man he murdered, in the extraordinarily compelling Broadway hip hop musical – “Hamilton.” “Hey, yo, I’m just like my country, I’m young, scrappy and hungry, and I’m not throwing away my shot,” responds Alexander Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda).
Theatrical genius Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the book, music, and lyrics for “Hamilton.” He is also known for his awesome work on “Bring It On” and “In The Heights.” Miranda slays as he powerfully brings to life one of America’s greatest founding fathers and developer of the banking and trading system, 1st Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton.
Hamilton born on January 11, 1755 in Nevis, an island in the Caribbean, was deserted by his father, James Hamilton, an unsuccessful Scottish merchant. Hamilton’s mother Rachael Fawcett Lavien believed to be a mulatto, moved to St. Croix with her two boys and opened a business.
Sadly, she died from fever when Alexander was only thirteen. Hamilton arrives in New York in 1773 at the age of eighteen, two years before the Revolutionary War. The predominantly Black and Latino cast use rap, hip-hop, R&B ballads to tell a fascinating American story of revolution and independence.

“In the provincial army, that is, of New England colonies, Negros were everywhere, fighting beside white men,” writes J.A. Rogers in his book, Africa’s Gift to America. You get to see this first-hand in Hamilton. It is so refreshing to watch a diverse group of skilled actors add some color to American history, so often whitewashed. One feels Hamilton’s conflict as European colonists fight for freedom from England’s King George (Jonathan Groff) while at the same time enslaving Africans and their descendants.
Other show highlights include, Hamilton and his comrade the Marquis de Lafayette (Daveed Diggs) joyfully sing after a win against the British – “Immigrants. We get the job done.” Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) and Hamilton rap battle in cabinet meetings over major political issues. Hamilton’s wedding to Eliza Schuyler (Phillipa Soo) with sister-in-law Angelica Schuyler (Renee Elise Goldsberry) professing her undying love for Hamilton, her brother-in-law. George Washington (Christopher Jackson) first as general, and later as president, through song and rhyme, counsel and mentor young Hamilton.
