According to new data released by the Health Department Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy lead the city in new HIV infections. The data states that as of 2014, the neighborhoods with highest rates of new infections include Bedford Stuyvesant – Crown Heights, Brooklyn with 162 new cases, Chelsea – Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan with 140 new cases, Central Harlem – Morningside Heights, Manhattan with 130 new cases and Crotona – Tremont, Bronx with 110 new cases.
It is believed that recent clinic and hospital closures may have contributed to the rise in HIV cases in the Brooklyn neighborhoods.
“A number of clinics and hospitals have closed in Brooklyn, so the persons who were previously in care are no longer in care, and they’re engaging in [unprotected] sex, drugs,” Suzanne Robert Davis, a program manager at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Health Center, told AM NY. “We have persons who are not accessing health care services at all, and they don’t know if they are HIV positive.”
