Bushwick resident, Juana Garcias, has made local history by becoming the first female captain of the New York Water Taxi since its launch 14 years ago.
Working for the water taxi is nothing new to the mother of two as she’s held a job with the company for the past eight years. Garcias worked her way up gradually from working the concession stand to deckhand all while going to night school to become a captain.
Though all 16 previous captains were male, Garcias says she’d the least bit intimidated.

“Men have their own pride and own plans in life,” Garcia told Pix 11. “They’ll say, ‘Oh, she’s just a girl. Why would she want to have such a big responsibility?”
Garcias shows that hard work and dedication can help you achieve your dreams. While she loves her new position, she does express that it can be hard. Garcias explains the toughest part is handling the 149-passenger boat in high tides but she’s not letting it stop her as she dreams of one day becoming captain of the Staten Island Ferry.
