“I believe the children are the future.” Especially for our beloved Brooklyn youth!
Michelina Ferrara, a program director, is working in conjunction with Brooklyn Community Foundation to bring a voice to the youth of our great borough.
“The Brooklyn Youth Voice Awards is about elevating the powerful voices of our youth – we believe they have the solutions we are looking for and we want to support their work through grants,” says Ferrara.
With many changes happening in Brooklyn, whether positive or negative, they’ll have a lasting effect on the generations to come. Who better to speak on these issues than the youth?

The Brooklyn Youth Voice Awards is an excellent outlet for the youth to flex their vocal muscles. After growing into my adulthood, it was then I noticed how the school system conditions the youth to be silent. There are many times I can recall raising my hand in class to either comment or ask a question, to receive a response of, “hold on one moment, let me finish this,” or, “I’ll call on you in a second.” I was often over looked or completely forgotten about, which made my class participation descend. We were rarely given the opportunity to share our thoughts or ask questions – things that are imperative to growth and communication. These very things defer “stupid questions,” promote voicing concerns and ensures that the youth will ask important questions like, “how?” and “why?” instead of always accepting everything they hear. There many things in this world that deserve to be questioned, like why Donald Trump is still allowed a space in the presidential race but that’s another story.
The youth can apply for a grant of up to $2,000 to “create and build the Brooklyn we want to live in, together!” All applications are to be submitted by February 17th, 2016.
