One Brooklyn man’s dream was to bike across country. He never knew one of his young students would inspire him to actually do it.

Ryan Cole, a 26-year-old cyclist, musician and behavioral counselor took a year to plan his journey across country in honor of his 10-year-old student, Maxwell Ryder, living with cerebral palsy — a congenital disorder of movement, muscle tone, or posture.

“I just think dealing and working with mentally disabled people, they don’t really have a voice,” Cole told SILive in a recent interview. “Other people need to raise awareness for them.”

Cole started his 3,000 plus mile journey on June 20, from New Jersey through more than a dozen states, to raise money for United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) and help people living with the incurable disease.

Cole traveled with two other cyclists he met along the way but biked alone during the home stretch to Santa Monica Beach in California — the final tour stop. He completed his tour on August 16, traveling through 16 states over 58 days. Though he was short of his $5,000 goal, Coal raised $1,225 as of August 17.

Cole made it clear to the publication that this wouldn’t be his last tour. “I’m going to tour probably my whole life,” he said. “If I’m doing it because I love touring, I might as well raise awareness.”

Cole currently has a Crowdrise campaign open in hopes to reach his goal. If you’re interested in donating, please visit here.
