BK Girls Night Out, An Event That Celebrates The Iconic Brooklyn Woman, Is Headed To Downtown Brooklyn

BK Girls Night Out, a sip and shop celebration of femininity and womanhood, is headed to Downtown Brooklyn.
The annual event, now in it’s second year, was created by longtime Brooklynite, Shinese Brathwaite. Brathwaite moved from her birthplace of Guyana, at the tender age of five, to Brooklyn in 1988. Having lived here for almost 30 years, she’s grown to cherish the borough and dreamed of ways to give back to her community, particularly women affected by breast cancer.
“I wanted to create an event that celebrated the Brooklyn woman but was also inclusive of their families,” Brathwaite said.
Brathwaite started the idea of BK Girls Night Out when she would have women gather at her home to network, share their personal stories and swap clothing. At one of the events many of the women would discuss how breast cancer had either effected their personal life or someone close to them. When the monthly events became too big to hold inside her apartment she reached out to local community vendors and event spaces to see how she can make the loyal gathering into something bigger.

BK Girls Night Out has now turned into an enormous brand. The event, held in October — breast cancer awareness month — will host over 25 different local vendors, clothing swaps, bridal and wedding event planning consultations, free makeovers, makeup and hair tutorials, giveaways in addition to honoring a number of women who are breast cancer survivors.
“There’s a woman who travels all the way from Washington D.C. for this event. BK Girls Night Out is now something special that I hope can become a major movement,” she said.
Since 2014, Brathwaite has organized numerous events in Brooklyn that have opened doors to local small business owners and created a space for them to sell their products. Brathwaite is an advocated of supporting your neighborhood and keeping the culture of old Brooklyn alive.
“Brooklyn has changed so much. I want to make sure people are supporting their local small businesses. It’s important for the community,” she said.
BK Girls Night Out will take place at the Sheraton Hotel at 228 Duffield St. on October 22, 2016 from 2pm to 7pm. The event is free and contrary to the event name, is open to the public—men and children included. Donations will be accepted for Pink S.H.O.E.S INC, a non-profit that promotes awareness of breast cancer in younger woman as well as educates and provides support for individuals and their family.
