NYC Comptroller Celebrates Caribbean American Heritage

by This evening attendees, artists, dignitaries, guests, and honorees filled the main hall of Manhattan’s Surrogate Courthouse to celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month with NYC Comptroller Scott M. Stringer.
The Comptroller enlightened, in 2004 Congresswoman Barbara Lee introduced legislation recognizing the major contributions of Caribbean people and their descendants to the continued growth and development of this nation.
Unanimously passed, Congresswoman Lee’s bill ultimately lead to the first Presidential proclamation declaring June Caribbean-American Heritage Month on June 5, 2006.
This year, President Obama once again proclaimed June Caribbean-American Heritage Month. In doing so, he once again reminded America that for “…every chapter of our Nation’s history, Caribbean Americans have made our country stronger…” and will continue to do so in the years ahead.
With Caribbean achievement in mind, Comptroller Springer bestowed commendations on four very distinguished honorees. It was important for OurBKSocial to attend this memorable affair. You see, immigrants in Brooklyn come from all over the world, but about one-third come from the Caribbean with many living in Crown Heights, Bed-Stuy, and Flatbush.

The Comptroller’s award was presented to:
Garry Pierre-Pierre (Haiti) — a Pulitzer Prize winning, multimedia and entrepreneurial journalist. He is also the founder of the City University Graduate School of Journalism’s Center for Community and Ethnic Media.
Caribbean Women’s Health Association, Inc. (CWHA) founded in 1982 — is an accredited advocacy group and service provider in the community. Its main office is 3512 Church Avenue, Brooklyn.
West Indian American Day Carnival Association, Inc. (WIADCA) the earliest known West Indian American Carnival was held in Harlem during the 1940s. Ms. Jessie Wardell, a Trinidadian got the permit. However, in the 1960s, Carnival moved to Brooklyn and the WIADCA was formed. Thomas Bailey, president, accepted the award and reminded everyone that the association is much more than Carnival on the Parkway.
Lowell F. Hawthorne (Jamaica) — is President and Chief Executive Officer of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill, the nation’s largest Caribbean franchise chain. Hawthorne is passionate about giving back to the community. Since 2005 his foundation has awarded over 300 scholarships to students in the U.S. and Jamaica.
