Scarlett, a former stray cat from Brooklyn has previously become a viral sensation for her heroic abilities. On March 30th, 1996, Scarlett and her five kittens were in an abandoned garage in Brooklyn. The New York City Fire Department responded to call of the garage being on fire that was later said to be started from undetermined causes. Upon arrival, the firefighters quickly got the flames under control but one firefighter by the name of David Giannelli noticed some movement. To his surprise, he watched Scarlett, who was badly burned carry her kittens away from the garage one by one. Scarlett, whose eyes were blistered shut with severe burns on her ears and paws was still able to save all of her kittens before personally collapsing.

On October 15th, 2008, 12 years after the Brooklyn garage fire, the North Shore Animal League, where Scarlett spent her time being treated, announced the passing of the heroic mother cat. To this day Scarlett’s legacy lives on as she is the featured animal in fund-raising and public relations efforts of the League. The League has also created an award in honor of the courageous cat, called the Scarlett Award for Heroism.
