One thing we do know is that Director Spike Lee is not one to hold his tongue, especially on the matters of injustice. Lee is using his large social media following to speak on an incident that has baffled New York City and quite frankly affects the world.
Over the weekend a Staten Island man, Eric Garner, was video taped being murdered by a plain clothes cop. The cop was seen in the video using an illegal chokehold on Garner that eventually killed him. The video showed Garner yelling, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,” yet the cops continued to do nothing. The video went viral and stirred an uproar amongst the residents of NYC. According to reports, Garner was only trying to stop a fight and as seen in the video didn’t try to attack any of the officers.
Spike Lee who just celebrated 25 years of his groundbreaking movie, Do The Right Thing, made use of his editing skills to show chilling similarities between his movie and the viral video. In the movie, Radio Raheem, who constantly blasts Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power” on his boom-box throughout the movie, is restrained by police in a chokehold that ultimately takes his life.
The similarities and time frame are so chilling and largely disturbing. The fact that 25 years later the same injustices are happening and nothing is being done. The NYPD is supposed to be there for protection and not harm.
All around such a heart wrenching situation.
