The beginning stages of a $2.75 million renovation of Dome Playground in Borough Park are officially underway.
While the ground breaking ceremony, attended by commissioner of Brooklyn Parks, Kevin Jeffrey, and City Council member Brad Lander, was officiated last year, it has been a slow and difficult process due to the parks’ lack of funding.
“The park department needs to be better funded for operating costs, maintenance, of very large and very complicated portfolio,” said Alec Appelbaum, a spokesman for New Yorkers for Parks, an advocacy group for the city’s parks. “At the end of the day, the ability of the department to maintain and build playgrounds and parks quickly is limited by the amount of money they have.”
According to a recent survey done by New Yorkers for Parks, it was shown that the park department hasn’t been efficient in how it completes its projects. Both in terms of how long it takes to complete the projects and in terms of staying within the budget.

Advocates have also been voicing their concerns on needing more money to renovate all the city parks that need to be improved. The city council has called for an additional $30 million in funding for the parks department as last year the city added only $15 million.
The plan for the completion of the renovation of Dome Playground will reportedly take about a year; again if sufficient funding is available
