In the wake of the mysterious death of Sandra Bland, a young black woman arrested for a routine traffic stop and found dead three days later in her jail cell and the #BlackLivesMatter movement, African-American female empowerment is needed yet silently asked for. Three young ladies from Brooklyn — Dazia Wallerson, Denequa Williams and Jessica Edouard, founded The Queen Collective, a group that sets out to empower women that not only look like them, but who have been disenfranchised and live in disadvantaged communities within the New York City area.
While a large part of the media incorrectly portrays the “black woman” as angry and boisterous, The Queen Collective sets out to challenge that stereotype and bring to light the intellectual, strong and independent woman of color. In doing so, not only do they change how the “black woman” is viewed but makes sure that the woman also stays encouraged, and empowered during the process.
Over the weekend, The Queen Collective held their first “Queen Series” event, that brought together a room full of woman of color to the YWCA in Boerum Hill. The four hour event was filled with guest speakers, a singer, a spoken word artist and lots of girl chat and heavy conversation about what it’s like to be living as a woman of color. Though the topic was specified for one group, all woman collectively could have gained a gem or two from the powerful event.
Here are 20 things I personally picked up that are sure to be of some light to women all over the world:
1. Follow your dreams but it will be hard.
Anything worth having won’t come easy. If you know as a woman (we have the gift of incredible instinct) that there is a job you want and deserve but you may not have the degree to get it, do everything possible to earn that degree, or gain that experience to obtain that job. If you know you’re to be in a position but it seems hard to get there, it will be, but it will feel amazing once you finally get there.
2. Many of your friends won’t support you and that’s OK.
In the pursuit of follow your dreams, you will lose friends. Don’t question it, as its natural. That just mean you’re doing everything right and they just don’t fit in your journey.
3. Trust your own path, it’s different from everyone else’s.
Even if it looks like you’re doing something similar to someone else, no one’s path is the same. It’s that simple!
4. Your vision should be so big it literally scares you.
How BIG are you dreaming? Are you thinking so outside of the box that it seems unachievable? You should be!
5. For your vision to manifest you’ll have to be totally committed to it, meaning you’ll often walk alone in pursuit of it.
Sometimes friends and family can be a total distraction from what you are trying to accomplish. They may want you to go out when you’re scheduled to work or take you away from your main focus. If you let it happen, you will be set back and they will be happy. If you don’t, you walk alone but you win. Make special times for your friends, outside of your work but don’t let it distract you from your work.
6. Use affirmations to manifest your destiny. If you viagra uk djpaulkom.tv want these medicines at a lower cost compared to buying the medication from a store.
I am well, I am powerful, I deserve the good life. Look you did it.
7. You’ll never gain confidence from an outside source, it has to fully come from with-in.
If you’ve been looking for other people to make you feel good…STOP! You are the only one who can make you feel good.
8. You’re NEVER the only one going through tough times.
Can I tell you a secret? Everyone is going through something, or has gone through something, or will go through something. You’re never alone, though it may seem like it.
9. Compliment your sister, it’s easy.
It doesn’t have to be deficult to say to another woman “Hey, I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful you look today.” Trust me, it takes absolutely nothing away from you to do it. It might even make you feel better. Start giving those compliments away like confetti.
10. Step outside of your comfort zone.
Nothing great comes from comfortablitiy. Didn’t we just talk about making your dreams come true will be a bit hard…well yeah. Step out of your comfort zone and watch the universe work!
11. Turn your insecurities into a business.
“People say you talk too much, have a talk show,” Iesha Tiffany, a wardrobe stylist, said at the event. Make what people talk the most about you, work for you!
12. There’s always someone watching.
Never let failure be an option. Someone is looking to you to make it, so that they too can believe they can make it. Be bold and stand out, someone is watching!
