Weeksville Heritage Center in Crown Heights will celebrate Juneteenth—a predominantly African-American holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery on June 19, 1865—with a series of planned programming. The week long celebration, dubbed Unapologetically Black Week, will feature documentary screenings, artist talks, #ForTheCulture town hall forums, and a special Summer Friday Day Party in collaboration with OurBKSocial founder, Ayanna Prescod.

Unapologetically Black Week programs are happening in conjunction with the center’s newest historical exhibitions In Pursuit of Freedom Now! and Forward Ever! Sacred Ground & Sovereign Space.

The In Pursuit of Freedom Now! exhibit features hidden histories of Weeksville, the second-largest community for free Blacks in the United States. The exhibition includes contemporary photographic representations and rarely seen images from Weeksville’s archives, coupled with the stories of changes and challenges facing the community’s past to present.

Forward Ever! Sacred Ground & Sovereign Space features contemporary and socially engaged art by ten artists of color. The exhibit has been curated by Independent Curator and Museum Activist, Monica Montgomery, of Museum of Impact & Museum Hue.

“Weeksville is transforming into a launch pad of freedom and meaning making, giving visitors the chance to witness and participate,” Montgomery says in a statement. “These stories of Black excellence, pride of place and activism, are near and dear to my heart; and i am happy to tell them through Weeksvilles space.”

All events and exhibitions are free and open to the public. For a full list of events and to RSVP visit WeeksvilleSociety.org.
