Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra: Friends of Frida
200 Eastern Parkway at Brooklyn Museum
Time: 2pm – 3:30pm
Price: $20/advance; $25/door
Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra celebrates Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving with a concert centered around the ballet symphony Horse-Power, by Mexico’s foremost composer, conductor, and educator, Carlos Chávez. The work premiered in 1928 at the Aeolian Hall in New York City to a sparkling audience of luminaries, including Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, who had designed sets and costumes for the ballet. BSO presents the “Horse-Power” suite alongside works by composers Silvestre Revueltas, Aaron Copland, and George Gershwin, all friends of Frida Kahlo. The program includes pieces loved by Kahlo herself—Revueltas’s “Ventanas,” Copland’s “El Salon Mexico,” and the overture to Gershwin’s 1930 hit “Girl Crazy.”
