The Local Development Corporation of East New York (LDCENY) and the Business & Career Center at the Brooklyn Public Library presents, “The Business of Black Power: How the Movement Impacted Economic Development.” This Black History Celebration is inspired by the book, The Business of Black Power: Community Development, Capitalism, and Corporate Responsibility in Postwar America edited by Laura Warren Hill and Julia Rabig. The main event features a panel discussion where meaningful dialog and conversations centered on topics that relate to black business.

Black-Owned Businesses: A History of Enterprise and Community in Brooklyn

Explore the rich history and social impact of businesses owned by and serving black communities in Brooklyn. Historian Jason Bartlett is joined by Cynthia Gordy Giwa, editor-in-chief of the online publication Black-Owned Brooklyn, and Jyll Hubbard-Salk, founder of Crown Heights yoga studio Urban Asanas, to discuss the challenges and triumphs of the network of black business owners then and now, and how growing economic empowerment has tied directly to the struggle for equality. Moderated by Digital Editor at Black Enterprise and host of What’s Eating Harlem?, Selena Hill.

Apple of the Eye: Early Modern English Love Magic

The links between love and magic, of enchantment and sympathy, have long been considered by poets, philosophers, and magicians alike. This talk explores the variety of occult theories and magical practices that seek to grasp both the divinity and madness of love, ranging from remedies of the ancient world, through to the love sorcery of Shakespeare’s day, and even offering some compare-and-contrast to various techniques and ingredients of modern American folk magic and hoodoo.
